Aviation and Aerospace Courses in the UK for International Students

While there are hundreds of aviation-related courses across the UK. These programs generally fall into three categories: Aviation ManagementPilot Training, and Aviation/Aerospace Engineering.

Studying aviation or aerospace offers the chance to work at the leading edge of technology, designing and operating vehicles that push human boundaries on Earth and in space. While often used interchangeably, Aviation typically refers to operating aircraft within Earth’s atmosphere, whereas Aerospace is a broader field covering both atmospheric flight (Aeronautics) and space travel (Astronautics).

  • Cutting-Edge Innovation: You can contribute to groundbreaking projects like sustainable, eco-friendly aircraft, urban air mobility (electric VTOLs), or missions to support human life on Mars.
  • Strong Career Prospects: There is a high global demand for skilled professionals, from aerospace engineers to pilots and airline managers, offering strong job security and competitive starting salaries.
  • Global Opportunities: Aviation and aerospace are inherently international industries, providing opportunities to work with diverse teams and travel the world.
  • Versatile Skillset: Degrees in these fields build rigorous expertise in mathematics, physics, and problem-solving, which are highly transferable to other high-tech sectors like automotive or renewable energy.
  • Aerospace Engineering: Best for those who love math, science, and the “how-it-works” of design. It typically leads to desk-based roles in research, development, and manufacturing.
  • Aviation/Piloting: Ideal for action-oriented individuals who enjoy dynamic environments and operating complex machinery. While a specialized degree is not always required to be a pilot, it can serve as a valuable technical foundation.

3-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree

In this bachelor’s degree, students learn about core aviation principles like propulsion, aerodynamics, and study aviation materials and structures.

Plus, Kingston University London’s Roehampton Vale campus is designed for engineers. Students will have access to wind tunnels and a flight simulator, and labs with material fabrication and testing capacities. This means that Space Tech students get practical experience with some of the tools they’ll use and challenges they’ll face in their career.

Students in the Space Technology pathway take the same classes as general aerospace engineering students in the first two years of study. However, in their final year, they’ll work on space-related individual and group projects. They must also take the Space Vehicle Design class.

Graduates will also have satisfied the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration, and partially completed what they need for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

These degrees focus on the business and operational side of the industry, including airport and airline management.

  • BSc (Hons) Airline, Airport and Aviation Management: Offered at London Metropolitan University, this 3-year course covers airline operations, marketing, and airport management.
  • BSc (Hons) Aviation Management: Available at Coventry University, including a “Sandwich Year” option for industry placement.
  • BA (Hons) Aviation Management: Offered at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
  • BSc (Hons) Tourism and Aviation Management: Available at the University of Sunderland.
  • MSc Aviation Engineering and Management: A postgraduate option at the University of South Wales.

Technical degrees focusing on aircraft design, manufacturing, and maintenance.

  • BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering: Available with an “Industrial Year” for work experience at the University of Nottingham.
  • BEng (Hons) Aviation Engineering: Core engineering program at Kingston University London.
  • BEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering: Includes flight test lessons and industry links to Airbus and British Airways at the University of South Wales.
  • BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering (Top-up): A 12-month program for students completing previous qualifications, available in the South East region.
  • MEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering (Sandwich Year): Integrated master’s degree available in Greater London.
  • BEng Aeronautics and Astronautics: Technical degree at the University of Southampton

Focuses on global airport operations, airline logistics, and commercial planning.

  • BSc (Hons) Airline, Airport and Aviation Management: A core program at London Metropolitan University.
  • BSc (Hons) Aviation Management (Sandwich Year): A business-heavy degree at Coventry University.
  • BA (Hons) Aviation Management: Available at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
  • BSc (Hons) Tourism and Aviation Management: Offered at the University of Sunderland.
  • BA (Hons) International Tourism and Airline Management: A degree with a global focus at Edinburgh Napier University.
  • MSc Air Transport Planning and Management: A postgraduate degree at the University of Westminster.
  • MSc Aviation Engineering and Management: Advanced study at the University of South Wales.

If you are looking to explore these careers further, consider these local events and introductory experiences:

  • Pilot Careers Live London: A dedicated convention for aspiring pilots, scheduled for Saturday 18 April 2026 at the Sofitel London Heathrow.
  • 8 Days English and Engineering University Program: A pre-university course in London designed for those wishing to explore engineering careers and student life.
  • Helicopter Trial Lessons: To get a taste of piloting, Flying Pig Helicopters in Borehamwood offers 60-minute trial lessons in Robinson R44 or R66 aircraft.
